Politics on Tap, is a quarterly mixer and a speaker series inviting local leaders and officials to meet with young people who might not normally have a chance to have some face time with said figures.

Bringing it back full circle to the group’s origins, the mayor was actually a founding member of the Santa Clarita Valley Junior Chamber of Commerce back in 1998, he said.

“It was an offshoot from the (Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce) and folks wanted to expand the reach into the younger people in the community,” he said, discussing the origin. “I was happy to be a charter member — of course, it makes me feel a little old to know longer be eligible to be a member,” he joked. “But I don’t know if I thought it would still be going and growing as long as it has. It’s been great to watch it grow over the years.”

The kickoff for Politics on Tap is March 16, from 6-8:30 p.m. with the speaker going on at 7 p.m.

Smyth’s plan is to offer the jaycees an overview of the city’s plans for the next year, and how the group might be able to help.

“I think the jaycees are a very locally focused group and so i think it’ll be nice for them, and for me, to be able to share what our agenda is for 2017, and areas where they can help and be involved,” Smyth said. “I think it’s important as Santa Clarita continue to grow and change, we need to have leadership and a new group of people getting involved and the jaycees are a great place to start.
