Mental Health Hearing Continued For Homeless Man Charged With Attempted Murder Of 70-Year-Old Woman

A homeless man who allegedly tried to strangle a 70-year-old woman jogging on a bike path in Santa Clarita last year is due back in court next month for another mental health hearing, according to officials from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

Colton Ford, 29, faces one count of attempted willful, deliberate and premeditated murder with an allegation that the defendant inflicted great bodily injury upon a victim 70 years of age or older, according to officials.

On Tuesday, a report on his mental competency to assist in his own defense was scheduled to be delivered to the court, paving the way for a criminal trial if he was found competent. But according to officials, another hearing was scheduled on Aug. 8.

“Since October of last year, the case has been in mental health court,” said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the District Attorney’s office. “Criminal court proceedings are waiting for the result of the mental health proceedings.”

On Sept. 26, 2017 at around 8:20 a.m., Ford allegedly attacked the victim on a bike path near Auto Center Drive and Creekside Road without provocation, strangling her and rendering her unconscious.

Two good Samaritans cycling on the path, including a retired police officer, reportedly witnessed the assault and detained Ford until deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrived at the scene.

“If not for the quick action of the two good Samaritans, the outcome of this incident could have been much worse,” Sheriff’s officials said in a statement at the time of the incident.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and was listed in fair condition.

If convicted, Ford faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years to life in state prison.

Ford is currently housed at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, in lieu of more than $1 million bail, District’s Attorney’s office officials said.
