Mother Of Six, Family Honored In Song Created By Santa Clarita Resident

Mother of six, Katie Evans, was killed in a car crash on Oct. 6, 2017 and a local Santa Clarita resident has wrote a song that will assist Evans’s youngest son understand his mother’s death.

“I couldn’t stop thinking and trying to process what Katie’s two-year-old, Gideon, was thinking,” said Kevin Loftus. “He was too young to understand death, but not too old to not notice his mother is gone.”

And that idea, that problem Loftus could not get out of his head, was the inspiration behind the lyrics of “Gideon’s Cry.”

The songwriter, Loftus from Saugus, does not actually consider himself a songwriter. However, after the certified public accountant came home to discover that his son’s best friend had just lost their mother, he decided to dedicate himself to helping in anyway possible.

“This story had rocked me to my core because my son is best friends with Travis, one of Katie’s sons, and it also affected me as a father and a member of the community,” said Loftus. “We were coming home that night from a concert at the Rose Bowl, and deputies were diverting us from Golden Valley Rd. because of an accident. I knew something bad had happened and so I said a prayer for that person and their family.”

But little did Loftus know, that the accident was the result of Evans being killed in a head on collision, but that the tragedy would hit so close to home.

“After we had found out it was Katie, my son wanted to go buy Pokemon cards to give to Travis,” said Loftus. “He also helped organize a lemonade stand with one of the girls from the Evans’s church.”

That lemonade stand, with the help of Travis and Kevin’s 6th grade class, would eventually raise $3000 to help Katie’s family following the collision, according to Loftus.

And it was after helping his son and his son’s class with the lemonade stand that drove Loftus to writing the song.

“I wanted to take massive action, and if a lemonade stand could raise $3000, then maybe a song could tack on another zero to that,” explained Loftus.

From recording a “very bad” version of the song, to being given the blessing of Jacob Evans, to reaching out to community members and friends within the industry, Loftus was eventually put in touch with acclaimed singer-songwriter Elsten Torres.

“We got in touch and I shared the story and Elsten is a wonderful artist and great human being,” said Loftus. “And he said to me ‘I’m in on it, Kevin.’”

From there, Elsten received the first draft, edited the lyrics and recorded the second version of the song.

“Right after Thanksgiving he sent a raw version and Elsten had captured it beautifully,” said Loftus. “He then connected with a producer who attached himself to the project. And (the producer) is out from Miami, but they gave money and hours and a dozen musicians to make it as beautiful as it is.”

For Loftus, Torres, the studio producers and the musicians, the song is not meant to generate fame or profits for themselves, but it has been dedicated to helping the Evans family in the wake of their loss.

“We have two very clear goals: the first is to spread awareness about drinking responsibly and not driving under the influence,” said Loftus. “Part two is the realities of rearing children without a mother.”

The funds raised by the song through various music streaming sites and the YouCaring page will all be donated to the Evans’ family for medical bills and helping raise Katie’s six children.

“We are doing this on a global scale with funds of my own and others on the team (to) push this to millions of viewers around the world.”

Loftus hopes that the song will be played on streaming services and radio stations across the world, including the United States, Canada, The United Kingdom and Australia.
