Nation Remembers, Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.

In celebrating what would have been his 88th birthday, Martin Luther King, Jr. continues to be honored throughout the country for the advancements he made in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

In 1956, when Rosa Parks provoked the yearlong bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, the Montgomery Improvement Association is founded to coordinate the boycott and King was elected president of the organization.

After years of emerging as a national civil rights leader, King delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial before over 200,000 people in August, 1963.

Throughout the 60’s, King is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, helps organize civil rights protests in Selma, Alabama and delivers a speech against the war in Vietnam before he is assassinated on Apr. 4, 1968.

In 1983, Ronald Reagan signed a law making King’s birthday a federal holiday, to be observed annually on the third Monday in January.
