The City of Santa Clarita is set to host an event on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. to celebrate the new Taylor Trailhead at Rivendale Park and Open Space, located on the west side of The Old Road, north of Calgrove Boulevard.

Those interested in attending must RSVP by Monday, Jan. 22. The event is free and open to the public, said city officials.

Located at the mouth of Towsley Canyon, Rivendale was formerly an equestrian and riding center. From the time the City purchased the site in 1995 it has served as an informal trailhead and public parking for the Towsley Canyon Open Space in the Santa Clarita Woodlands, a park unit of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (SMMC).

In 2015, two 1960’s era stucco buildings were demolished and the site was cleared to make way for a more formal parking area. This effort coincided with the City’s purchase of an adjacent 118 acres immediately north of the park and the opening of the Elder Trail which created a new, moderate loop trail that ties in with the existing Towsley Canyon trail system.

The new Taylor Trailhead features parking for 26 vehicles, open space signage, fencing and access control gates. Additional spacing is available off The Old Road, according to officials.

The trailhead connects to the Taylor Trail which recently was expanded and now offers three miles of multi-use trails for bicyclists, equestrians and hikers to enjoy.

“It’s important for our residents and future generations to develop an appreciation for our open space and trails. These open spaces are vital in preserving our natural land and protecting biological resources. With the opening of Taylor Trailhead, we’re adding another access point that makes it convenient for visitors to explore the trails,” says Mayor Laurene Weste.

  1. Just a word to the wise, there was a recent diagnosis of ‘Valley Fever’ or coccidioidomycosis in a hiker who regularly hiked Towsley Canyon. Coccidiodomycosis is a fungal spore that lives in soil and can become airborne when the soil dries out and becomes airborne when the dirt is disturbed (such as walking or biking through it, or even as a result of high winds). It’s not clear (to me) if these spores are more or less abundant in certain areas. Just thought I’d share this info b/c there have been more cases of Valley Fever reported recently. If you regularly spend time in dusty dirt (i.e. a dirt biker or regular hiker) and have any persistent respiratory or skin problems which have been going on for quite a while, see your doc. Just thought I’d share this out of concern for our SCV residents.
