Newhall County Water District (NCWD) announced this week its customers reduced water use by 21 percent in June 2016 compared with the same month in 2013, a date once-used as the mandatory conservation benchmark.

This same month, the NCWD Board of Directors lifted local restrictions on watering, including the watering day restrictions and 25 percent mandatory water use reduction target. The action came after the State of California lifted statewide drought restrictions to allow for local drought planning and self certification of reliable water sources.
It was customers’ consistent conservation efforts, which contributed to the Board’s move to lift some local restrictions.
“During this historic drought, our customers have risen to the challenge and conserved roughly 27 percent since mandatory restrictions went into effect last spring,” said Steve Cole, NCWDGeneral Manager. “The District is confident – as we always have been – that our customers can continue conserving the necessary amount of water through voluntary measures.”
Cole added that the District will continue empowering customers to self-conserve in order to meet new requirements.
“NCWD believes our customers know best how to save water,” concluded Cole. “We will continue providing them with the tools they need to use water more efficiently than ever.”
The District still urges voluntary conservation, as it is still required to reduce use by 20 percent by the year 2020. Water waste regulations are still in effect.
