Robert Arvizu, 50, of Newhall, was convicted Monday. The jurors deliberated for less than a day in the case before finding him guilty of first degree murder. He was also found guilty of an assault the same day.

Closing arguments wrapped up Friday morning, and the jury was given the case to deliberate in the afternoon.

The jury was expected to not only determine Arvizu’s guilt or innocence, but in finding him guilty, there were varying degrees of punishment, according to officials.

He’s now due back for sentencing August 15.

Prosecutor Julie Kramer with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office argued for a first-degree murder charge, which would results in a much lengthier sentence for the 50-year-old Arvizu.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies entered the home the Arvizus shared in May 2015, and discovered Courtney unresponsive, appearing to have injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. The 25-year-old Courtney Arvizu was declared dead at the scene.

Arvizu was also convicted of an assault that took place that same day.

Courtney Arvizu married Robert Arvizu in March, according to a Facebook post linked to Courtney Arvizu.

She operated a clothing line known as “Fitness Hardcore,” at the time of her death.

Arvizu reportedly faces up to 30 years to life in prison due to the conviction.
