The opening of the new post office was delayed five times after issues with construction, according to David Walton, United States Postal Service spokesman.

“The post office opened its first window Monday,” said Walton. “There are still a few finishing touches that need to be made — but we are operational.”

City officials were happy the location was finally operational, after a lengthy struggle due to a few unanticipated challenges.

“I am elated that it’s finally open,” said City Councilmember Marsha McLean. “It’s been a long haul, from the first time when we heard it was leaving Newhall from the campaign to make sure it stayed in Newhall to it actually being open.”

The lack of a Newhall location made it difficult for those without transportation, McLean noted.

The delays were due to the ‘weather not cooperating’ with construction — the parking lot could not be finished with the recent rains, said Walton.

“The PO boxes were installed Friday and were operational Saturday,” said Walton. “We are happy to see this now open to the public.”

The new post office serves the south-end of the Santa Clarita Valley — there is one in Canyon Country, Saugus, Castaic and two in Valencia — including the main location for the valley.

The fight for a post office in Newhall goes back to 2015, when officials moved the existing office to a temporary location on The Old Road.

The area has been without a post office since The Old Road location closed in August of 2016.

The new permanent Newhall Post Office is located at 23736 Lyons Ave.

  1. Just curious as to whether the address in the text (23736) or the one in the picture (23742) is correct?

  2. All of this to move a Post Office a few hundred feet from it’s former location and you want to trust the government with your health care????

  3. Looks like the address is 23742.

  4. Addresses given to Any citizen of Santa Clarita Valley must be followed by a listing of the cross street, or close landmark we would actually know. Sorry to criticize a reporter, they do a tough job, but who in the world would know an address from a street number?? Ask 3 people , I’m telling you telling us a street number gives us absolutely positively no clue to a business, residence, park, official building. Please, re think this habit, give us a clue.

  5. Street Address plus street name is not enough for you? Let me know when you are ready to visit. I will hold your hand and take you to it.

  6. C’mon people it’s 2017, it took me literally 5 sec to copy the address into Google maps and boom there it is …. Wheeler and Lyons right next to Altadena express
