Nunes Memo Released, Steve Knight Responds

Congressman Steve Knight responded to the Friday release of a controversial declassified memo from GOP members of the House Intelligence Committee about alleged actions by the FBI investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election, saying he still stands by the FBI despite concerns raised in the memo.

“The information contained within the now declassified memo released today is very concerning,” said Knight. “As a career law enforcement officer, there is nothing I cherish more than the rule of law. Criminal and civil investigations must be conducted in the sole pursuit of justice and without political consideration.”

However, despite the “very concerning” information, Knight stated the newfound developments do not shake his faith in Robert Mueller and the FBI.

“Today’s revelations do not in any way make me question the validity of Robert Mueller’s investigation or his leadership,” said Knight. “I fully support the investigation into Russian interference in our election and will continue to do so until it is properly concluded upon discovery of the full truth.”

Knight also added the agents of the FBI and Department of Justice, in his mind, remain “consummate professionals,” and he still believes they will “continue to serve our nation with honor and distinction.”

Voting along party lines earlier this week, the House Intelligence Committee decided to release the Republican sponsored memo that alleges abuse of powers and misuse of surveillance programs by agents of the FBI.

“The highly controversial memo from the GOP and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes alleges that then-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe told the committee that no surveillance warrant would have been sought for a Trump campaign aide without a disputed opposition research dossier on Trump and Russia,” CNN reported.

The release of the classified document was brought to the public’s attention through a never-before-used committee rule, and officials have noted that it’s publication lends credit to an overgrowing schism between the President and his Justice Department and intelligence community, both of which contended against releasing the document.

The President justified releasing the document in during a press conference on Friday, saying he believed the purported bias against Republicans by the FBI was a “disgrace” and said certain people should be “ashamed of themselves.”

However, Democratic House Minority leader, who also sits on the House Intelligence Committee has been criticizing the decision to release the memo since Republicans voted to on Monday.

Additionally, the FBI issued a rare public warning Wednesday that the memo omits key information that could impact its veracity, according to officials.

“The FBI was provided a limited opportunity to review this memo the day before the committee voted to release it,” the FBI said in a statement earlier this week. “As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”

Former FBI director James Comey has also jumped into the discussion by showing support for his former colleagues against the “weasels and liars.” Friday morning, Comey tweeted that the memo was “dishonest and misleading.”

Critics of the President’s and fellow GOP Congressman have stated that the purpose of the memo is an attempt by Republicans to discredit the Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.

  1. I’m with Comey on this. This memo is not the full context, so once again trump tries his hardest with his diversion tactics. He continues to bully, make threats, Fire, step on people to make himself feel good.
