Just five months after its grand opening, Oakmont of Santa Clarita’s residents are not only getting involved in their own senior living community’s activities, but in the greater Santa Clarita Valley community as well.

Residents partnered with the Senior Resource Alliance of Santa Clarita Valley to participate in the Caregiver Resource Day held at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital on May 7, and also appeared at the 43rd annual Frontier Toyota/Henry Mayo “Drive Safe” Golf Classic hosted by the Valencia Country Club on May 14.

In addition, Oakmont residents brought the community to them for their first Passover Seder toward the end of April featuring a local rabbi and a four-course dinner prepared by Oakmont’s executive chef.

“We had 45 people at our Seder, residents and families of all religions. It was so heartwarming,” said Margie Veis, executive director of Oakmont of Santa Clarita. “I just took that step back and I thought, wow… In (five) months, look where we are. It was beautiful.”

Oakmont residents hosted even more families during a special Mother’s Day brunch, which gave residents the opportunity to skip the “hassle” of going out to a crowded restaurant to celebrate the holiday with the added bonus of live entertainment.

Lastly, Oakmont residents held a special Cinco de Mayo celebration for their families on May 5 featuring dancers, mariachis and margaritas.

“We’re so fortunate to have (our activity director Gina) on board,” Veis said. “She comes with a degree in recreation therapy and she really understands the importance of that therapeutic recreation.”

Regular activities residents are getting involved in around the senior living community include exercise classes, twice-daily movies, guest speakers, outings, computer lessons, bridge and poker games, bingo and much more.

“It’s not just plain bingo– bingo can be a cognitive activity,” Veis explained. “It’s multi-taskng, it’s interacting with other residents.”

A guest speaker recently visited the community to talk about their experience with traveling and show residents photos, which Veis said offered both a geographical and educational component.

“Residents could share their travels, and had anyone ever been there,” Veis said. “It’s a simple activity that can become very complex, and then (residents) bond friendships from that. It’s so much more than just a simple act, and again, we’re watching it unfold before us in these few months.”
