Moving into an assisted living community can be a nerve-wracking experience for some seniors and their families, but feeling confident in the capabilities of the staff can make a big difference.

“We hope that they don’t have to worry, and if they are worrying, I really feel that our team has so much experience and knowledge,” said Margie Veis, executive director of Oakmont of Santa Clarita. “Even though Oakmont is the newest assisted living community out in Santa Clarita, we have the most experienced staff because we’ve all worked together for 5, 7, 10 years.”

Even if a senior and their family determines that Oakmont of Santa Clarita isn’t the right fit for them, Veis noted that the community’s staff can still be a valuable resource.

“We bring that knowledge whether you move into Oakmont or not,” she said. “We’re a resource as well, so if Oakmont isn’t right for you, we’ll help you through to get to the resource that you need because of all the knowledge that we have.”

In addition, Oakmont staff welcome regular feedback from residents on a number of different things, using what they call “resident council.”

“It’s always looking forward — what can we do better?” Veis said. “Are we perfect? No, but we’re striving every day, looking at how we do things and how can we improve them using resident council, having residents come forward with, I like to call them suggestions, not complaints.”

Residents can participate in a “food council” to let Oakmont staff know what they want to see more of on the menu or what new additions they would like made, as well as an “activities council” to help plan day-trips and in-community activities.

“We can’t plan the activities and say, ‘Ok… this is what you’re doing,’” Veis explained. “But we can get feedback from you. We just started a new yoga class, we just started some new board game type things, because that’s what the residents want. The outings that we go on are what the residents want.”

Oakmont’s founding family, the Gallahers, even went as far as creating a putting green at Oakmont of Santa Clarita after a resident noted he was an avid golfer, and the green has become a standard in all Oakmont communities.

“It was important to the (Gallaher) family as much as to the resident that he would be able to putt, so the Gallahers said, ‘Find a place for it; we’ll put it in.’ And now that’s the Oakmont standard — all the communities are having them.”

Veis continued, “I think that’s something that the Gallahers really stand behind, is having a community and then looking at it and (asking) what can we do better?”
