“Oakmont is a sponsor for the walk and our Oakmont of Santa Clarita community has a team,” said Dembkowski. “We are ‘Team Oakmont,’ and we have been fundraising and doing different events (in) the community to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s.”

Hosted annually nationwide by the Alzheimer’s Association, the 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Santa Clarita is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Bridgeport Park, located at 23521 Bridgeport Lane in Valencia.

Registration is expected to begin at 7:30 a.m., with the walk expected to commence at 10 a.m.

“It’s basically a walk around Bridgeport Park,” said Dembkowski. “It’s about two miles… You can have people sponsor you and that’s how we raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association, who really is the biggest fundraiser for (Alzheimer’s) support, and most importantly, for research.”

So far, about 395 people have signed up to participate in the Santa Clarita walk, and around 85 teams been have formed locally.

“Any individual who wants to walk and support the cause can form a team,” Dembkowski said in a previous interview. “There’s no registration fee to start a team, and hopefully you and your team can raise funds.”

Dembkowski reminds those individuals not interested in walking at the event that volunteers are always needed as well.

“If you are interested in volunteering or helping out with the walk — maybe not necessarily walking or participating — we can always use volunteers to help that day,” she said. “There’s just so many different ways people can get involved, and we have all that information at Oakmont.”

The walk also features a Promise Garden where flowers are displayed representing the different people who have been affected by the disease.

“We have flowers that represent someone that is caregiving, someone who has lost someone to Alzheimer’s, someone who is supporting the cause,” Dembkowski said. “There is a beautiful ceremony honoring these people and it’s so moving and … it touches my heart, as someone who has lost someone to Alzheimer’s.”
