The program is designed for seniors struggling with the cognitive changes associated with dementia, which can be caused not only by Alzheimer’s disease, but also by Parkinson’s disease, a head injury, a stroke, poor blood flow and more.Oakmont of Santa Clarita - Assisted Living & Memory Care

“Our staff is specifically trained to deal with some of the issues that might come up,” said Executive Director Margie Veis.”There might be behavior issues or difficulty with performing activities of daily living.”

For example, a senior in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s may not recognize what a piece of clothing is or understand how to dress themselves, Veis added.

“As you progress in this horrible disease, you lose that ability for mobility, you lose the thought process of how to sequence activities,” she explained. “You might see a woman come out with her bra on her t-shirt because she’s lost that ability to sequence those events.”

Program staff have received specialized training in working with dementia patients, meeting their specific needs while helping them maintain as much independence and dignity as possible.

“It is critical, because these are adults with wonderful lives,” Veis said. “It’s somebody’s mother, it’s somebody’s sister, it’s somebody’s aunt.”

Veis called the Traditions Memory Care program “a godsend” not only for its residents, but for their families as well, who can have the peace of mind knowing their loved one is being cared for by qualified staff who can provide specialized assistance to meet their needs.
