In the 1880s, Old Town Newhall was an oil boomtown, which made it the center of economic activity in the Santa Clarita Valley, according to city officials.

“Newhall may not be the center of the universe, but it is definitely the center of our community,” said

Mayor Laurene Weste. “It has grown so much in the past 20 years.”

Later on, during the 1940s and 50s, it became a busy shopping district, but that didn’t last long.

Business started to decline in the late 60s and 70s, and by the 80s, it was the least attractive shopping destination, according to city officials. Commercial developments around the area led customers away.

“Back then, there was a highway going over 50 miles an hour,” said Weste. “It gave no one incentive to slow down and stop by downtown Newhall.”

It wasn’t until Santa Clarita became a city that the redevelopment began. A unique plan was launched, which would hold on to the historic charm of Old Town Newhall, in addition to the refreshed projects that would transform the community.

The City’s vision has revitalized the area, welcoming pedestrians to the local shops and restaurants, while having them enjoy the Walk of the Western Stars, according to officials.

“There are many events,” said Weste. “It’s a wonderland.”

With the city’s support and ongoing partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Old Town Newhall is once again a safe place to explore, according to city officials.

“Old Town Newhall has always been the center of our universe,” said Weste.

The current developments along Main Street are expected to bring exciting opportunities to the community.

The project is anticipated to be complete in summer of 2019 with 47 modern apartments, trendy shops, restaurants, a parking structure with a capacity of 372 vehicles and a new seven-screen Laemmle Theatres.
