Crossroed Theatre’s newest production is the One Act Play Festival, in which short plays consisting of a single act are performed by young people from throughout the area.

Cast and crew for the festival include residents of both the Santa Clarita Valley and San Fernando Valley.

“We’ve been planning this production for nearly a year now,” said Samantha Raskin, a SCVi senior and founder of the company.

Calls went out for scripts in 2016, and 20 submissions were reviewed, and seven have been chosen for the event.

“It’s a collection of seven one act plays written by Santa Clarita youths,” said Raskin. “It’s a community of artists and we wanted to collaborate on this theater piece together.”

The opening weekend of the festival took place May 13-14, with two nights of shows being performed at the SCVi theater.

“It was incredible,” Raskin said. “I was so so proud of all of our students. We had a lot of people come and go in the yearlong process. It’s been amazing to watch.”

The process ㅡ and Crossroeds Theatre itself ㅡ originally started as a school project where Raskin was tasked with designing a business.

She decided to combine her passion for performance with a business mindset, starting Crossroeds Theatre, a production company based out of Santa Clarita.

“It began as an economics project,” she said. “I’ve been interested in theater for a very long time. I thought producing and being on the business side would be a good experience.”

So along with the theater’s co-founder Sierra Miller, Raskin put on the company’s first production, “Lend Me a Tenner.”

From there, they began planning for the next event, the festival, which they hope to continue in coming years.

“We hope to continue for many years to come,” said Raskin.  “We’ve been collaborating with a  lot of new people. We would love to continue the One Act Play Festival.”

Amber Raskin, Samantha’s mother and the co-founder of Santa Clarita Valley international, said she was proud of the accomplishment and the goals that have been set for the future.

“They’re hoping to make the One Act Play Festival something that’s signature to Santa Clarita,” she said. “It’s really neat. They’re proud of it, and what I’m proud of is they did it all in high school. That’s our whole thing at SCVi: that you’re in the real world now –don’t wait, so do it now. And they seized the moment and did that.”
