The West Ranch High School students entered into the 3rd annual Culinary Arts Throwdown and won the competition in April.

The Culinary Arts Throwdown is a culmination of a yearlong program that pairs students in teams as they battle in the kitchen. Every year, Wolf Creek Restaurant adds the winning team’s dish to the menu, allowing more Santa Clarita residents to taste them.

The competition was designed by Hart District culinary instructor Mike McClintock in 2015.

“I just started teaching about four years ago, so when I teach the program I teach it from that point of view, from working in a restaurant” said McClintock. “There’s a lot of things to be cautious about, working in the kitchen, as far as time management and being able to get tickets out on time.”

Jared Sotiangco, one of the winning students, began taking courses in the culinary arts program less than a year ago.

“Earlier in April we had a competition where we present our dish in front of a few judges and they pick the one they liked the best,” said Sotiangco, “They gave us the opportunity to teach the chefs here at Wolf Creek how to recreate our dish.”

Isabell Zheng, the other West Ranch winner, also said she was a novice in the kitchen at the beginning of the year, but has become familiar with the culinary profession in a short time.

“I feel really excited to be here, and it amazes me that just in the beginning of the year I barely knew what a bunch of knife cuts were,” said Zheng. ”Now I’m here cooking my dish for a bunch of people.”

The students were invited to Wolf Creek Restaurant in Valencia to recreate and their ‘surf and turf’ entree side by side with the restaurant’s professional chefs.

The surf and turf dish is expected to be available at the Wolf Creek Restaurant for a limited time.
