The William S. Hart Union High School District is building a curriculum around a popularized personal finance program it has been sponsored by for three years.

This year, the district applied for grants for Valencia and Golden Valley campuses and expects to offer the courses in the next year.

The Hart district plans to educate over 2,000 students by the end Spring, 2018, teaching high school students about things like personal finance, budgeting, insurance and other basic life skills. The Hart district is Santa Clarita’s public junior high and high school district, and has approximately 22,000 students.

The district receives its sponsorship from Heter Family Woodworking through Noah and Brendie Heter, Santa Clarita business owners.

“Kids are loving the class and their parents are thrilled with the results. Don’t you wish someone had helped you learn these basic skills earlier?” asked Brendie Heter, owner of Heter Family Woodworking, rhetorically. “The entire Santa Clarita Valley will benefit from the next generation learning how to avoid major financial pitfalls. This class is instantly changing behavior and impacting lives.”

Hart district personnel approached Heter, requesting for additional sponsored curriculum.

“We are grateful for Neylan Group and the Heter family’s sponsorship and commitment to educating today’s high school students about personal finance,” Dave LeBarron, director of curriculum for the Hart district said. “Parents, teachers and students have been very supportive and welcoming of the new program.”

The personal finance courses received positive feedback in 2014, when the sponsorships fueled a pilot program to evaluate its effectiveness with students in the classroom.

The course gained popularity with students and parents sothe district worked with the two businesses to apply for additional grants and received funding from the Ramsey Solution headquarters in Nashville.

Before the program launched, only nine percent of students believed saving money was possible at all stages of life. The statistics changed after taking these courses. Now there is a change to 94 percent of students who believe saving money is possible and necessary at all stages of life.

Additional grant opportunities are available for homeschool groups and charter schools. For more information about the curriculum or receiving the curriculum for your school, interested parties can contact Brendie Heter at (661) 645-3426.
