On Thursday, April 5 at approximately 11 a.m., all six sirens will be activated for 10-15 minutes to test functionality, according to Sgt. Sean Walters of Pitchess Detention Center.
“If residents hear the siren during the test period, don’t be alarmed,” Walters said. “The center is making sure all of the equipment is working properly.”
Pitchess has six “World War II era” sirens located in the western Santa Clarita Valley as far as the Valencia Industrial Center on Tourney Road, said Sheriff’s officials.
“We are seeing how far these signs can reach,” Walters explained. “With the new developments in Valencia, we want to make sure all the residents are aware of any potential escape.”
Pitchess Detention Center is preparing for a more in-depth escape drill this summer, which tests the prison’s new escape protocol.
“This new plan is two years in the making,” Walters added. “It will include new social media notifications as well as the traditional methods of communication, including notifying the media.”
The Sheriff’s sergeant warned residents to be prepared in the event of an actual escape occurring at the detention center in Castaic.
“If you hear the siren outside the test period, make sure you lock your doors and stay inside,” Walters said.
The test on April 5 is set to start at 11 a.m. and last 10-15 minutes. Residents should not be alarmed of any sirens during this period, according to Sheriff’s officials.
