Santa Clarita is looking to make itself even more bike-friendly, and gathering residents’ feedback on a potential program for pedalers.

Bike-sharing exists in a number of forms, and Santa Clarita is looking at first, getting the interest level from the community, and then, soliciting input on which type of bike program might work best.
“They exist in all sorts of different shapes and sizes,” noted Evan Thomason, economic development associate for city of Santa Clarita, who’s collecting the information for potential plans. “Our goal with our bike-sharing survey is to find out if there’s a desire from our residents and community members to see if there’s demand for a bike-sharing in our community and what that might look like.”
Part of the idea is looking into the potential for the city to expand the use of its 100 miles of trails with a bike-sharing program. Perhaps due to the area’s geography and paseos, respondents thus far have indicated an interest in using the program “recreationally.”
Of the more than 400 respondents, more than 75 percent have indicated support, about 15 percent are indifferent, and another segment is not interested in seeing a bike sharing program.
About two-thirds of respondents have indicated they’re aware of the programs and how they work, with a quarter of all respondents having actually used one.
“There are a wide variety of different ways that bike-sharing has been implemented,” noted Thomason, adding one nearby method is Metro’s Los Angeles bike-sharing program.
“Metro has a bike-sharing program that utilizes a TAP card,” Thomason said, “there are other ones that are more smart device-centric, with a point-of-purchase through the phone, or there are large-deployments.”
The city is expected to discuss the results so far, at a quarterly tourism and economic development meeting next week. However, the survey is soliciting feedback until March 31, at which point the city is expected to look at some community meeting on the topic geared around the initial input.
The city is also offering a reward for participation. Four respondents will win a $25 gift card to a sporting goods store that will be drawn from the answers.
Residents who would like to give their input can take the five-question survey at BikeSantaClarita.com.
