Railroad Fire Burned 13 Homes, 85 Percent Contained

The Railroad Fire scorched about 10 acres of brush while spreading to more than a dozen homes and injuring several firefighters Monday before forward progress was stopped.

The fire broke out around 4:15 p.m. in the 20900 block of Via Estrella, north of Newhall Avenue and west of the Antelope Valley Freeway, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Three firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered during the blaze, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Flames began on a hill adjacent to two apartment complexes, and were quickly blown toward one of the buildings, according to residents.

Helicopter crews were on scene making water drops and ground crews moved in to protect the structures.

By the time the fire’s spread was stopped around 6:15 p.m. Monday, 13 homes had been damaged by the blaze, according to officials.

An evacuation center was set up at Golden Valley High School for those affected by the fire.

The Railroad Fire was 85 percent contained and all roads were open as of Tuesday morning.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
