Be Prepared

Have Safety Equipment

Having the safety equipment that you need is really important.  Make sure that you are prepared with eye protection, gloves, and knee pads or other necessary safety equipment.† One of the mosÒ common reasons that someone gets injured when remodeling or refinishing floors is that they do not take the time to use the safety equipment that they need.

Know How to Handle Asbestos

If you have an older home then finding asbestos is something that could potentially occur when you are refinishing your floors.  It is really important that you follow EPA guidelines for how to handle and dispose of asbestos.  There are likely asbestos contractors or others that could help you with this if you do not know what you are doing.  The most important thing is that you do not attempt to handle this on your own without knowing what to do or you could end up making yourself very sick.

 

Take Precautions When Using a Drum Sander

 

Even if you have used a drum sander one hundred times or more you should make sure that you take extra precaution.  For one you need to take frequent breaks.  Not only is this healthier for your but it is also good for your floor.  If your drum sander overheats then it could cause damage to your flooring that would make it hard to fix and nearly impossible to remodel.

 

Keep Your Workspace Clean

Finally you have to make sure that you are keeping your workspace clean.  This is important for a wide range of different reasons. One is that you are less likely to trip over something or have something dangerous happen out of carelessness.  Another is that when you keep the workspace picked up it is safe for others who might be walking through the room.  Finally keeping the area clean is going to help you to get your work done quicker which means you are less likely to be tired.

Remembering how important it is to stay safe when you are working on your home is the number one thing that is going to prevent an accident or injury.  You will be glad that you took the extra precautions mentioned above when you are finished, have a beautiful home, and did it all without sustaining any injuries.  Refinishing floors can be tough so take that into mind before you embark on the journey.  It is definitely something that you need to finish if you are going to get started.
