The Pacific Coast Championship event is being hosted by the L.A. Kraken Underwater Hockey Club, a co-ed group who offers local residents the opportunity to come try out the unique sport.
“We have players of all levels from beginners to members of the US World team,” reads a statement on the L.A. Kraken website. “We encourage new players to come out and try this exciting sport. You do not need any special skills to play and we were all beginners at some point in the journey.”
Originally known as Octopush, underwater hockey is a real sport played around the U.S. and in over 20 countries including Australia, New Zealand, UK, France, Germany, Philippines, Columbia and China.
The game begins with 6 players from each team in play and 4 substitutes in a waiting area, referred to as the box.
“Both teams rush out on a strike and work to keep possession of the puck while moving it toward the opposing team’s goal,” reads a description from the L.A. Kraken website. “A point is scored when a player puts the puck into the goal.”
The puck is weighted in a way for it to stay on the bottom of the pool. Players push the puck with small sticks that they hold in their gloved hands.
The 2018 Pacific Coast Championship is set to last through Sunday night at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.
