Santa Clarita Arts Education Ranks Higher Than Most L.A. County Schools

Santa Clarita arts education was ranked higher when compared to other schools surveyed for the Los Angeles County secondary school art program, officials said.

The survey revealed that in areas like theatre, music, visual arts and media arts Santa Clarita schools scored above 50 percent, where Los Angeles Union School District schools scored below 50 percent in those same areas.  

The lowest scoring art program in Santa Clarita was dance, scoring at 21 percent, while LAUSD scored 18 percent in the same area.

The survey was administered to all 2,277 public schools in L.A. County to learn about the quantity, quality and equity of arts education within the county.

In order to generalize the responses to all schools in L.A. County, survey weights for schools were calculated, and an adjustment for non-response was implemented, according to officials.

Using these statistical tools makes it possible to state with a high degree of confidence that the findings presented apply to all schools in L.A. County, not just those that responded to the survey.

The L.A. County survey revealed key findings like art instruction is offered in nearly every school within the county, most schools offer two or more disciplines, as well grades 7-8 grade are the peak years for arts instruction and when all disciplines of art are offered in school.

Overall, this study found that art education is part of the curriculum in most L.A. County public schools, that its quality can be improved, and that persistent problems of equity must be addressed if we are to ensure that all students have the benefits of high quality arts education, according to Los Angeles County.
