The Pinewood Derby program is an old-fashioned youth program with 21st Century applicability.

Through the program the children are learning and reinforcing science, engineering and mathematics that they learn in school over the years.

“Our members are developing STEAM skills and knowledge in Pinewood Derby. And they are having fun doing it,” said Club CEO Matt Nelson.  “We have two fantastic volunteers, Bill and Darleen Lyons, who are working with club staff to provide this opportunity to our members.”

Children seven and older design, build, and race their cars, which are made from small blocks of wood.

The children in the club design their cars, and once they complete their ideas, and the volunteers take the wood home to cut, before returning the shaped cars to the children for sanding, paint and additional building.

It is hands on learning at its best, organizers said, as participants have to consider and test how the laws of physics, such as friction and gravity, will affect their car’s ability to make it over the finish line first.

Pinewood Derby is part of the Boys & Girls Club’s Summer Brain Gain program. Summer Brain Gain aims at reducing summer learning loss experienced by youth over summer vacation.

Funding for Summer Brain Gain was provided through generous donations at the Club’s Annual Benefit Auction: All That Glitters is Gold last month.

“The support we received during Fund-A-Need at the Auction this year is being used to run awesome educational summer programming like Pinewood Derby.  Thank you to everyone who donated in support of the Club,” said the Club’s Board President, Ann-Marie Bjorkman.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
