The four-hour operation was focused on “collision-causing factors involving motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The majority of the citations were for cellphone use, Sgt. Scott Shoemaker of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

“Deputies observed motorists talking on their cell phones when they approached crosswalks,” Shoemaker said. “Others were using the red light as an opportunity to text.”

Drivers were also cited for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk or failing to stop for a red light. One driver failed to stop for two adults pushing baby strollers across an intersection, according to Sheriff’s officials.

The department is choosing several locations to conduct enforcement. These locations are areas where pedestrian and bike collisions have occurred, along with the violations that led to those crashes over the past three years.

Increased enforcement is expected to spark an effort to lower deaths and injuries in those areas.

“The purpose of the operation was to enhance public safety and the awareness of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists,” Shoemaker said. But he also noted several other violations involving drivers who were not obeying traffic lights.

“We did have a few people run a red light,” Shoemaker added.

One woman shared her experience with traffic enforcement on Twitter.

“Enforcement isn’t about revenue. That’s not a goal,” Shoemaker said. “I know a lot of comments on social media (criticizing enforcement) is all about revenue.”

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to Sheriff’s officials.

  1. As a cyclist in this valley – I appreciate the Sheriff’s efforts to keep both pedestrians and cyclists safe.

  2. If it was about money, they would pull over every car with a dark tinted driver window. Which would 95% of carsbon this valley. But they won’t bc it is not bc of money.
