“Several factors influenced productivity by our motor team,” said Motor Unit Sgt. William Lynch of the Sheriff’s Station.

One deputy issued 37 citations to drivers travelling at unsafe speeds, and another citation to a driver who almost hit a pedestrian crossing the street.

Increased patrols by motorcycle deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station have been in effect since early May, with an emphasis on looking for distracted drivers with electronic devices in hand.

“If you think you see more motor deputies on the roads of SCV — you’re correct,” station officials noted.

“The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station now has a motorcycle detail of five deputies and one sergeant,” said Sgt. William Lynch, “(the unit) has a mission – to significantly reduce traffic collisions, injuries, and deaths in the City of Santa Clarita.”

Drivers are prohibited from holding and operating their phones for any purpose — unless the device is mounted to a dashboard or windshield. Even then, it must be activated with only one finger tap or swipe.

This law covers all smartphone uses, including mapping applications and music playlists. If the device is used in a hands-free manner, such as speaker phone or voice commands, that is legal, but never while holding it.

First-time offense tickets start at a minimum of $160, while subsequent offenses start at a minimum of $285. The operation was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety.

“As part of the joint mission of SCV Sheriff’s and the City of Santa Clarita,” officials said in a statement, “we will continue our proactive traffic enforcement efforts to make the roads safer for all.”

  1. The city is dreaming if they think all this extra enforcement is going to make a difference. There’s to many drivers that have no interest in complying. All this will do is bring in revenue to the city and make no impact on compliance. There’s just to much traffic and too many folks in a hurry. All the extra enforcement efforts will be for not. On the bright side it will keep the city budget on target.

    • “too” not “to”, “naught” not “not”. Besides that, though, what’s your plan? Give up? Park the police cars and walk away? Eliminate the laws? I see lots of derision, but no alternatives.

  2. THANK YOU to our Sherriffs on patrol at least there is some effort being made to make our streets safer. Driving is a privilege and should not be taken for granted. It only takes one accident to ruin someone’s life! Not to mention the families.

  3. These motorcycle cops are the biggest d-bags in the county.

  4. An accident occurred behind me and I pulled forward to clear the road. One of these enforcement officers saw that I was over the limit line and I was pulled over (no concern of what just happened behind me). When I tried to explain he said “Don’t want to hear it, you were over the line and that causes accidents”. He didn’t even want to see my registration and insurance, just asked what year the vehicle was. In three minutes he printed out the ticket and was on the way to raise more money. My first ticket in 25 years, but that does not matter, tried to help others, but he didn’t want to hear it, didn’t even make the time to listen. Yes, grab the low hanging fruit and move on. At $400+ a ticket, that is $8000 an hour.

    Thanks

  5. Two Things…
    1. If you get pulled over by a bike cop, you will get a ticket.
    2. Don’t speed.

  6. Has anyone noticed the increase in very dark tinted windows? That’s so no one including law enforcement can see cell phone use or anything else going on inside the vehicle. Many states have a law against dark tint. Think about it. 5 motor officers is a drop in the bucket. The people and their kids that have moved up here in recent years just absolutely don’t care about laws or safety or others.

  7. Via Princessa , Soledad, Bouquet, Golden Valley, Sierra hey, never see law enforcement. Student leaving COC on Rockwell or Sierra hey totally out of control, no u turn means nothing. It goes on and on.

  8. The street we and many others use for exercise, dog walking and waiting for school buses has no enforcement. Several of us have called the non-emergency number and ask for enforcement during the morning when there is the most pedestrian activity, but we haven’t seen a deputy, motorcycle or not, once since those calls. They did put up one of the mobile radar sign that tells you how fast you are going but they only left it there ONE DAY!!!

    • Not enough money in it! You have to turn around tickets every three minutes.

      • Police departments normally get little and most often nothing from the tickets they write. The CHP gets none at all, ever. Cities get a little; counties get some; the courts get a pretty good share for building, operating and security; emergency medical services get some for cleaning up after crashes; the state gets some; there is some for getting DNA samples from those in jail, and the list goes on.

If you really want to protest the cost of a ticket, there is a foolproof way to do it, to thwart their evil, money grubbing intentions. Just don’t break the laws! No violation, no ticket, no revenue generated to the government! What could be simpler? Done deal. Starve them with compliance.
