Saugus High School senior, 16-year-old Joey Johnson, is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday at Jersey Mike’s Subs in an effort to build rescue dogs a new roof to take shelter, and have playtime, under when the weather warms up.
“I’m going to build them a whole new gazebo because the one they currently have is covered in termites,” Joey said.
New Leash On Life, whose mission is “saving the lives of homeless animals and improving the lives of people,” is an organization that spays and neuters pets as well as rescues and places dogs with responsible pet owners, according to the website.
The fundraiser is expected to be held at Jersey Mike’s Subs in Saugus on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the restaurant will donate 15 percent of purchases to the Boy Scouts of America for Joey’s project.
Joey has been in Boy Scouts for six years and was a Cub Scout for three years. He began volunteering at New Leash On Life, located on Placerita Canyon Road in Newhall, as part of the Hart District Regional Occupational Program Advanced Animal Care and Services class last year.
“I walked the dogs, gave them company, gave them water and food, cleaned their cages, spent time with them,” Joey said.
He hopes to continue into the advanced class ROP class this spring.
“Later on, I would like to become a veterinarian at a no-kill dog shelter,” Joey said, adding that after graduating from Saugus High in 2016, he is planning to take classes at College of the Canyons and Pierce College.
Joey expected to complete the gazebo project by enlisting friends and family over the course of three Saturdays. The projected cost of the project is about $1,500.
“It’s helping out the animals, not just benefiting my project, it’s helping the animals during play time and if it’s hot they can go in the shade,” Joey said.
