Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of disorders that involve a loss of muscle mass and consequent loss of strength. The Muscular Dystrophy Association funds research and raises awareness of muscular dystrophy among the public.
“It’s a big deal and it means a lot to me personally that’s why I do what I can so they make these run as smooth as possible,” said Lindsey Smith, mother and volunteer for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Muscular dystrophy mainly affects young boys, but rare forms target adults and sometimes females. The main form of genetic disorder may affect up to one in every 5,000 boys.

All of the Los Angeles County Fire Department participated in the one-day event.
Firefighters stood on the corner of Via Princessa and Sierra Highway with their rubber boots, collecting cash and coins for the fundraiser, officials with the LACoFD said.
“It’s the least we could do to come out here and spend an hour. Each crew coming out here to fill the day and trying to get donations,” said firefighter Mike Toepfer.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department has raised money for the muscular dystrophy Association for 65 years, according to fire officials. Over that time, the fire department has raised around $630 million for the fight against the genetic disorder.
