Santa Clarita Invites Public To Clean Santa Clara River

The City of Santa Clarita is inviting the public to help clean the Santa Clara River on Sep. 23, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., starting behind the shopping center at 18386 Soledad Canyon Road.

“This is an excellent volunteer opportunity for scout troops, youth groups, and the entire family,” officials stated in a news release.

Volunteers must pre-register through a web-based volunteer system.

Officials advise participants to wear “appropriate clothing” for walking the riverbed, including sturdy shoes and no sandals, plus to bring sunscreen and a hat for the long hours in the sun.

No Pets are allowed, officials added.

Santa Clarita officials will provide participants with gloves, collection bags and refreshments, meanwhile encouraging volunteers to carpool, walk or bike to the event, as parking space is limited.

The Santa Clara River is the longest free flowing river in Southern California, and is one of its last two natural river systems, according to greensantaclarita.com.

To date, thousands of volunteers have collected over 422,000 pounds of trash and debris from the Santa Clara River and its tributaries, reads the website.
