KHTS sent out requests to Santa Clarita’s leaders in Sacramento and Washington D.C., asking them how they took the news of John McCain’s passing:

Senator Henry Stern, D-Canoga Park:

“John McCain was a patriot. And while I don’t agree with every vote he ever took, there is a duty to country that transcends politics, and Senator McCain was the standard bearer for that selfless tradition. He will be sorely missed at the dark time of self-importance and false grandeur.”

Assemblyman Dante Acosta, R-Santa Clarita:

“Sen. John McCain’s passing was a loss for our entire nation. His was a life well lived, and his legacy will be remembered for his love of family and country above all else. For decades he has served our country, from his military service, to the pain he endured as a POW, and then as a public servant. Carolyn and I, along with my entire family, send our condolences to the McCain family.”

Assemblyman Tom Lackey, R-Palmdale:

“John McCain was a true patriot who valued service to his country above all else. His military service was a striking example to the nation about what duty and commitment truly mean. The United States was fortunate to have a statesman like John McCain. He will truly be missed.”

Rep. Steve Knight, R-Palmdale:

“Throughout his entire life, John McCain exemplified the honor, dignity, and values we cherish as Americans. A hero of the Vietnam War and a dedicated public servant in the Senate, he is a patriot of the highest order. May he rest in peace and may God bless his family.”

Ed note: Senator Scott Wilk’s office had been contacted by KHTS, but was unavailable to provide a statement by the time of this article’s publication.
