Andrew Straughan, 24, was home in Santa Clarita after completing a four-year tour in the Marine Corps when he died in a crash last week on Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.

“Andrew was very well-loved by everyone he met,” said Brittany Uhl, Andrew’s sister. “He just had such a big heart.”

“He had that charismatic personality that would just touch people’s lives, and I’m extremely grateful for the time that he was here,” said Michelle Lawson Straughan, Andrew’s mother. “He’s my angel now. He’s going to be looking over me.”

Straughan came home to Santa Clarita after serving four years in the Marines. He was stationed in Hawaii, Japan and South Korea.

The veteran was taking Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) classes at College of the Canyons.

“He just wanted to help people,” Uhl said. “He was very excited to serve his country on the front lines.”

The Bowman High School grad was driving on Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus at about 9 p.m. on July 4 when he crashed into a pole, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

The 24-year-old was declared dead at the scene, according to Fire officials.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Unit.

  1. How very sad for a young person to get killed but especially someone who has been serving his country. I infer that the driver who hit him from behind did not stop? Is the driver still at large? What do the police think? Were there witnesses? What do street surveillance cameras show?I hope KHTS follows up on this.
