On Friday, April 20, the day before they were headed back home from Bora Bora to start their new life as Mr. and Mrs. Knight, tragedy struck.

“We went from the most amazing dream honeymoon to the biggest nightmare we could imagine,” said Alana.

Today, John and Alana wait in the ICU at Ta’aone Hospital in Tahiti as John recovers from the tragic incident.

“John had an accident and fractured his C-7 vertebrae and had to have emergency surgery,” said Dori Lancaster, Alana’s lifelong friend. “He was taken on a boat gurney to the airport, and flown on an emergency medical plane to the main island of Tahiti, as Bora Bora doesn’t have a real hospital.”

Because of his spinal cord trauma, the entire left side of his body has been affected, which means his left lung wasn’t functioning properly.

“He initially couldn’t feel his legs and we were both petrified that he had just been paralyzed,” said Alana.

Although he hasn’t needed nasal oxygen treatments for the last several days and sensations are back in his legs, he hasn’t been able to move his left leg much.

“The neurosurgeon said there is no guarantee that it will ever resolve and only time and tons of therapy will tell but John is hungry to fight to walk again,” said Alana. “For now, he is bedridden and cannot move too much.”

Along with being in a foreign country and having communication barriers, the Knights have compiled many obstacles during this time.

“Although John has insurance, they are uncertain if any of his expenses will actually be covered, and that is naturally causing a great deal of stress,” said Lancaster.

Adding to the financial stress, Alana is trying to get him medically transported back to the United States and will most likely need medical assistance on the flight from a nurse and doctor, according to Lancaster.

Since they do not have any more paid time off from work because they used it for their honeymoon, the out-of-pocket expenses piled up.

Lancaster has set up a GoFundMe page for the newlyweds to get rid of some of the financial burdens—so far, $92, 235 has been donated of the $200,000 goal.

“I’ve married into some beautiful friendships and John and I are lucky to be surrounded by such top notch human beings,” said Alana. “I’ve cried every day out of fear of John’s situation, frustration, and tears of joy from the amount of love that is out there for John.”

Although the Knights still don’t know when they will come back home, they still have hope.

“Through this nightmare, there have been many blessings we are forever grateful for that have not gone unnoticed. First and foremost, John is alive,” said Alana.
