The Santa Clarita Valley is hosting the 2017 Cowboy Festival — an annual event which features Cowboy, Western, Americana and folk music styles on various stages — on April 22-23. Other performances include magicians, gun spinning, comedy sketches, yodeling, storytelling and folk stories.

“Bringing back old favorites and introducing new performances, the 24th annual event features more than 20 musical acts on five stages at William S. Hart Park, two venues in Old Town Newhall and other venues throughout the city,” according to a press release.

Named “the best Western songsmith since Ian Tyson” by the Los Angeles Daily News, Jon Chandler plans to perform songs from his critically acclaimed album, “Westerns,” on Mane Stage. Other performers include: Tony Furtado, Dead Winter Carpenters and The Show Ponies.

On the Ranch House Stage, festival-goers can see the intertribal pow wow drum group Wild Horse Singers and Dancers, old-timey magician Pop Haydn, the gun spinning of Joey Dillon and the comedy sketches and yodeling of Sourdough Slim.

In addition, folks will not want to miss the tales of Joe Herrington and performance of Ballet Folklórico, according to city officials.

At the Hart Hall Stage, audiences can hear the Western tunes and cowboy styles of Carin Mari, Andy Hedges and Dave Stamey, Tom Corbett and Bill Knopf, Gary Robertson and Kristyn Harris. Also on the same stage, a youth poetry presentation will be showcased.

Additionally, the Heritage Junction Stage is scheduled to show the “traditional folk and American roots music” of The Haunted Windchimes, according to the band’s websites. Other Heritage

performers include: Syd Masters and The Swing Riders, The Vivants, and Run Boy Run

The new Outwest Stage is hosting the “smooth vocal blend” and “feisty folk style” of the Women On The Move Trio, the “rough and ready” John Bergstrom, and the “eclectic mix of cowboy, bluegrass, old-time, folk and spirituals” of Almeda Brawdshaw. Sharing the stage with these musicians are authors Andria Kidd and P.W. Conway, according to the Festival website.

Alongside the outdoor stage performances in the park, off-site local venues plan to have separate performances and activities for ticket holders.

On Friday, April 21, the Canyon Theatre Guild hopes to expose audiences to the soul of cowboy music by the melodies of Sons of the San Joaquin and Kristyn Harris. Then on Saturday, April 22, returning for their second performance of the festival, The Haunted Windchimes are scheduled to take the stage along with Grammy-nominated Don Edwards, according to the city press release.

At the MAIN theater on Wednesday, April 19, Mary Kaye and Joe Herrington provide Western music and storytelling. At the same venue on Friday, April 21, The California Feetwarmers pay homage to ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing. On Saturday, April 22, Rosie Flores plans to show off her award-winning stylings.

Also privately supporting the festival, the Rancho Camulos Museum presents Jon Chandler on Friday, April 21, and participants can enjoy a southwest buffet and costumed docent-led tours of the Heritage Valley, according to event organizers..

On Saturday, April 22 at 8 p.m., authors Garner Palenske and Nicholas Cataldo will be bringing the history of Wyatt Earp back to the Hart Mansion, according to the city press release.

Admission to the main Cowboy Festival on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 at the William S. Hart Park event area includes access to performances by 21 bands and artists on five different stages: Mane, Ranch House, Hart Hall, Heritage Junction and OutWest.
