“Being ratified by the L.A. City Council this morning was not only an honor and privilege, it was a promise on my part to continue to lead this great organization into an age of collaborative, community-based policing,” Moore said.

Moore was one of three finalists in the race to become the next chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“You were selected from 31 candidates because of your experience and your depth of knowledge,” City Councilman David Ryu told Moore. “You’ve risen through the ranks. You were a police officer, a detective, a sergeant, a lieutenant, you worked patrols, investigations, and administrative assignments throughout the city.”

“Quite frankly you are the LAPD, and your experience and position makes you extremely qualified to represent the LAPD and the thousands of men and women who have sworn to protect and to serve,” he said.

Moore was immediately sworn into office by Garcetti after the vote, although he does not officially become the chief until midnight, when Beck’s retirement becomes effective.

“The most important question of the moment may be, why do I want to be the next chief of police of this great city,” Moore said. “And it’s pretty simple. I wish to continue to momentum of building trust, particularly in communities of color, and improving public safety while we build a more diverse and representative department.”

Moore has risen through the ranks of the department as a police officer, detective, sergeant and lieutenant working various patrol, investigative and administrative assignments throughout the city.

Most recently, Moore became the first assistant chief and was assigned as director of the Office of Operations. In that position, he oversees the department geographic bureaus and patrol divisions, which provide uniformed and investigative services within the city of Los Angeles.
