“We don’t do cuts or styling,” said Lucy Papazyan, owner and operator of the salon. “We specialize in just the prevention and removal of head lice.”

The product used at the salon has all organic enzymes, giving children and parents a break from the usual lice treatments riddled with dangerous chemicals.

Magic Nit Pick Lice Removal Enzyme is an all natural and organic enzyme solution that aids in nit removing and helps break down nit glue when used in conjunction with the “Terminator Comb,” according to Nit Pick’s website.

“The traditional methods that have been around for over 30 years aren’t effective anymore,” said Papazyan. “The traditional chemical treatments just make them (the lice) stronger, and the lice are immune to it.”

Magic Nit Pick’s non traditional treatments are the most natural and effective ways to treat lice out there, and include a strand by strand combing method, according to Papazyan.

Papazyan became interested in different, more effective lice treatments from her own experience as a child and when she had her own children and wanted safer, more effective  options.

Papazyan did her own research, went through training and now labels her own enzymes.

She opened her own lice removal salon in Studio City and that location did so well that Papazyan was recently able to open a second location in Newhall.

“The warmer weather here in Southern California creates a year round problem,” said Papazyan.

Papazyan works with community outreach programs, schools, and pediatricians.

According to Papazyan, many chronic, ongoing lice infestations are misdiagnosed as dry scalp syndrome.

“Many children are prescribed ointments and prescription medications that aren’t going to work,” said Papazyan.

“The salon is very calming,” said Papazyan. “Customers leave calm and collected.”

They combine a moral obligation to safety and respect for both the children and their parents and effectiveness in removing the problem.

Some helpful hints and information from the Magic Nit Pick Salon:

– discourage head to head contact

– if one person shows symptoms of lice, treat all members in the household

– keeping long hair in braids and buns helps reduce the chance of getting head lice

– when children are at sleepovers, encourage them to sleep in a star pattern, with all children’s feet facing inward

– wash helmets, car seats, and headphones whenever possible

– lice can not jump or fly, they crawl. So don’t “create a bridge” for them to do so

– you can not share a lice infestation with pets, and they can not give them to humans

– it takes 24-48 hours for the lice to grow weak and die
