Santa Clarita Safety Town — an annual summer safety education camp that educates young children on pedestrian and vehicle safety — was recently named as a finalist for the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant.

Organizers of the Santa Clarita-based program are encouraging community members to help them win the grand prize and be named one of 40 contestants to win a $25,000 grant.

Santa Clarita residents have the opportunity to vote in the grant competition until Friday, Aug. 24.

Safety Town is described as a miniature city specifically built for small children. The city includes a “secured playground, with traffic lights, street and stop signs, striped walkways, crosswalks and streets,” according to Safety Town’s website.

The week-long program covers topics on how to deal with strangers, fire safety, animal safety, playground safety and earthquake safety, along with various similar safety precautions.

“Under the guidance of (a) California credentialed teacher, trained volunteer counselors and local community safety professionals, 40 children at each camp will learn and practice essential safety skills they will use in their everyday lives — at home, at school, in the community and in the future,” the website states.

The program offers education for 120 kids per year, and the winning funds for this year’s State Farm competition could help meet the needs of more children and offer adults a new program, according to the education camp.

“With this money, Safety Town will have an opportunity to expand our program and reach almost 40 percent more young children,” said Susan Russell, the executive director of Safety Town.

Nearly doubling the size of its program will help Safety Town officials in their mission to empower Santa Clarita children by teaching them safety and injury-prevention skills that they can then use at home, school, in the community and for the future, according to Russell.
