At a May 23 board meeting, the Sulphur Springs District board members passed a resolution to begin the installment of new school safety technology.

The new Raptor Technologies’ visitor management system is designed to control access to the campus, requiring visitors to present their drivers license and allow the computer program to run a cross-check with a known sex offenders list.

In addition to the running the background check, the Raptor Technology system is able to print out a name badge for the visitor with a picture of their face, name and destination printed visibly on it, according to officials.

Sulphur Springs plans to continue with their rollout of the program, implementing the new security strategy at all nine schools within the district.

And the Canyon Country elementary school district is not the only one considering the technology.

At their May 2 Governing Board meeting, William S. Hart School District officials deliberated on the utilization of the same Raptor technology at all district sites.

Although the Board decided to table item until a later date because of questions individual trustees had, Hart District spokesman Dave Caldwell said campus security remains a “top priority” for school administrators.

“We have a district-wide policy to take any threats we get very seriously and immediately contact the Sheriff’s Department. And they immediately move into action,” said Caldwell. “Our relationship with the department is second to none.”

Caldwell said campuses continue to have assigned Sheriff’s deputies who are “regarded as much a part of the staff as anyone else.”

The Hart District also continues on with their other district-wide security policies, which they have had in place for years, he said. These policies include  requiring all district sites to be fully enclosed with fencing and having campus security constantly monitoring the entrances and exits.

Beyond running background checks on visitors, schools have taken more traditional measures to improve school safety.

Over the last year, Valencia Valley Elementary in the Newhall School District has began construction on an eight foot tall fence that encloses the formerly open spaced campus.

Many of these new and existing measures have been revisited in recent months, by either parents or school administrators, due to an apparent increase in threats made against Santa Clarita campuses.

In the months following the the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, seven Santa Clarita Valley schools — SCVi, West Ranch High, Saugus High, Golden Valley High, Arroyo Seco Junior High, Canyon High and Valencia High — had all individually received reports of potential violence against their campuses.

In each instance, school officials reported that the security measures in place had been effectively used, and that administrators that worked with law enforcement in order to assess the validity of the threat.

  1. My polling place has been at an elementary school for the past 10 or 12 years.
For the last few years in light of the horrific and senseless mass murders of innocent children there for an education, just walking onto that campus unescorted with no security during classroom hours has given me an uneasy feeling. This year I will be voting at a fire station. Thank you for that change.
