Santa Clarita Sports Report – July 27, 2018

Los Angeles Dodgers

Manny Machado hit his first home run in Dodger Blue as Los Doyers defeated the Braves, 8-2, on Wednesday.

LA currently sits a game and a half ahead of the Diamondbacks for the NL West lead. Arizona has an opportunity to do some damage, however, with a weekend series against the bottomfeeder San Diego Padres.

Clayton Kershaw has had a bumpy year to this point, but there’s more than enough time to find his form. He gets another chance today in Atlanta against Mike Foltynewicz. Say that five times fast.

First pitch is at 4:35 from Turner Field, be sure to catch it live on KHTS FM 98.1 your hometown station.

NFL Training Camp 2018

The Los Angeles Rams opened training camp yesterday at UC Irvine and celebrated a contract extension for the reigning Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley, signed earlier in the week. The deal made Gurley the highest paid running back in the NFL.

LA added three former All-Pros to an already talented defense in the offseason, and how the defense (and it’s colorful personalities) gels under the brilliant Wade Phillips will be the most important storyline of camp for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

As for the Los Angeles Chargers, depressing news has already broke on the first day of players reporting to camp (camp officially opens on Saturday for all players).

According to Ian Rappaport, Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett suffered an injury during his conditioning test that will likely sideline him the entire year. Brutal for a player who’s only made it on to the field four times in 2016 and missed all of 2017.

That being said, the Chargers are one of the youngest and most talented teams in the AFC, and with the addition of first round pick Derwin James, the hope is that the secondary can absorb the loss much like it did last season.
