“We are the generation that will grow up in the shadow of gun violence,” said an Academy of the Canyons student at the event.

The school participated in a national walkout that marked the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado, which left 12 students and one teacher dead, in addition to the two gunmen.

Friday, students walked out of their classes at 10 a.m. and gathered at the school’s plaza to host an open mic and present voter registration forms.

The topic is still fresh in the minds of many students, said Valeria Vazquez, a junior at the high school and organizer for the Santa Clarita event, because of the recent Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting in Parkland, Florida.

“We are walking out for those who lost their lives to gun violence, to talk about the real problems our country is facing and to find solutions (for) the problems that our leaders have failed to address,” National Walkout Day organizers said on their website.

Students will not be punished for walking out, according to Hart District officials. However, the walkout, unlike previous demonstrations in the district, was not sanctioned, meaning students could face penalties such as being marked tardy or truant.

There were over 2,600 walkouts planned, at least one in every state, according to organizers.

  1. They do know that kids and their students are doing school shootings not strangers, somebody might want to let these ignorant kids know.

  2. I believe our kids would be much better off learning how to be courageous and to overcome, instead of dwelling on the fear and loss of control. IMHO, these continued ‘walkouts’ are perpetuating these fears:( And I don’t agree that school time should ever be compromised because it’s like saying, ‘it’s ok–go ahead and walk out without any repercussions, you poor thing. You are so scared. Walk out, talk about your fears and don’t worry about a thing!’. Does anyone else see that this is not healthy for our kids in the long run? And while I’m on my soapbox, how about staging these walkouts AFTER school hours? If we treat our children like snowflakes, we are only encouraging them to dwell and hold on to their fears, which in the end, has long term negative implications well into adulthood.

    • Catbee,
I agree with you. These kids are in a state of fear perpetuated and fed by the groups that believe the government will protect us if we disarm the society. When has government done anything, except extorting money from people, better that private citizens?
The environment that the children of today grow up in has a lot to do with why some of them go crazy. When I grew up there were boys and girls but now there are twenty-something genders, now kids as young as six want sex changes, now religion is mocked as some sort of non-science ignorance, now every thing you do leaves a carbon footprint that accuses you of ruining the planet, now honesty and hard work gets you less than the trickery and deceit that politicians get a free pass on.
This is a scratch in the surface and we expect everyone to come through all this bull and nobody will go nuts? We need to get back into what used to be called common sense, which is not so common anymore, and take a good look at what the children of today are exposed to and how it affects them.
