The movement focuses on demanding the safety of students and put an end to gun violence and mass shooting in schools, according to the organization.

“This march is important to me because our peers are losing their lives,” said Valencia High School senior Ally Sagardia, who organized the Santa Clarita event. “Kids all across the nation are scared to go to school every day. This is not okay and it cannot be considered a ‘new normal.’”

The Santa Clarita march will unite with hundreds of other marches commemorating the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Although the organizers support the right of law-abiding Americans to keep and bear arms, as set forth in the United States Constitution, they are calling out for common-sense responsibility.

“I have three younger siblings, two of whom are in elementary school,” said Valencia High School senior Joe Defreitas. “When I was that age, I didn’t worry about losing my life at school. I was taught that school was a safe environment for learning and growth.”

Santa Clarita students, teachers, families and residents who share the same commitment to safety in schools are expected to join the march on Saturday, March 24 at Marketplace Park in Santa Clarita at 10 a.m.

Marketplace Park is located at 23811 Newhall Ranch Road.

The event will start off with a memorial, followed by a rally where students and prominent leaders will speak, ending with the march.

“This march is important to me because increased gun control is long overdue,” said Saugus High School sophomore Olivia Hurst. “I’m so sick and tired of seeing students die because politicians and people in positions of power won’t do anything.”

  1. Why has this event turned into a political event? This is so sad that the kids are being used like this.

  2. It is sad indeed our kids are being used as slaughter props because we have failed to demand common sense protection in the form of firearm legislation. This is about life. How is staying alive political?

  3. This is a political event because we are demanding that our lawmakers and politicians take action to protect our citizens and students from preventable assault weapon violence. The Kids are not being used– they are stepping up and taking action to demand safety and sensible gun control. We are taking political action in an effort to save lives.

George M Colvin – When are protests not political? When is talking about what our government is responsible for and who they answer to not political? What is wrong with taking political action on a public health issue where children are dying? CHILDREN are being MURDERED. And you’re worried about them being at a constitutionally protected peaceful protest?
