“This really is our time for our organization the historical society to shine,” said Evan Decker, a board member of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, explaining how the Historical Society opens corners of Heritage Junction usually closed off to the public throughout the year.
Right next to William S. Hart Park in Newhall, the Newhall Ranch House stands at the Heritage Junction. The Historical Society unlocks the house’s doors once a year during the Christmas Open House.
Inside, families wandered the halls of the home that historians with SCVHS date back to 1865, according to the historical society’s website.
Christmas decorations adorned the houses rooms, as a man in a Santa suit greeted visitors of the home. One boy played Christmas tunes on a worn down piano inside the home as his family examined the olden architecture.
AJ Montes De Oca, the 9-year-old on the piano, has been coming to the event with his family for three years, and said he enjoys the Christmas music.
SCVHS has been hosting the Christmas Open House since 1981. Attendants of the Christmas Open House could participate in the various arts and crafts activities for free.
The vice president of SCVHS’s Board of Directors Cathy Martin, told a story that detailed the distinct way the Historical Society spreads the Holiday Spirit in Santa Clarita.
Martin explained that one woman told her “It isn’t Christmas until Santa’s in the train,” explaining how the Santa blow-up figure the historical society hangs by the train catches the eye of various passersby.
“Every day in the rear-view mirror is history,” she said.
