Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast To Feature Dr. Alveda King, MLK’s Niece

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is set to be featured as the keynote speaker at the 14th annual Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast this week.

Residents are invited to Kelly’s Banquet Hall in Santa Clarita on May 3 to join the community and elected leaders in breakfast and communal prayer.

Those who attend the event are expected to enjoy a complete breakfast provided by the Diako Group, including musical entertainment.

Since 2004, the Santa Clarita Valley has continued a tradition stemming back from the first National Prayer Breakfast held by President Eisenhower in 1953.

Every year, many local businesses and organizations partner up to present the Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast in order to bring the event to the community.

Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast events in the past have featured influential keynote speakers to inspire residents to support civic leaders in making the valley a safe and prosperous place to thrive, according to officials.

This year, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been invited to lead the prayer breakfast by speaking to the audience about her challenges, triumphs and testimonies as an African American woman.

Alveda King currently advocates for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, sharing her testimony of two abortions, God’s forgiveness and healing.

King grew up during the civil rights movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Birmingham, Alabama.

When she was young, her family home in Birmingham was bombed, as was her father’s church office in Louisville, Kentucky.

Alveda was jailed during the open housing movement and continues to be a force in the the pro-life movement, according to officials.

  1. Something left over from the Red Scare-McCarthyism era. Communists were officially atheists so Right Wingers decided we had to be officially religious, (Constitution be damned!) to counter the Rooskies. Please pray for sanity and don’t spend one nickel of public money for this silliness.

About Gilbert Bernal

Gilbert A. Bernal Jr. has been part of the KHTS video department since Jan 2017. He was hired as video editor in June 2017 after his four-month internship in the video department. While serving as a video intern, his duties were extended to become a multimedia journalist, producing news videos for KHTS News and Features. Gilbert was added to the KHTS team as part of the station’s continued growth and expansion. An Army veteran, father and local artist Gilbert has dedicated time and energy to volunteering at schools in the Santa Clarita Valley. At Pinetree Community Elementary School, in Canyon Country, Gilbert donated art for school auctions, photographed events and painted murals. At Canyon High, he gave two art demonstrations for the “Yes I Can” organization, a peer counseling class that focuses on learning about disabilities, social inclusion, and tolerance. Starting in Feb 2017 Gilbert launched the “KHTS Man On the Street” video features which gather and reports local opinion of Santa Clarita residents on current issues or events. A return student at College of the Canyons since 2014, Gilbert has been apart of the Media Entertainment Arts department working as a college assistant. After enrolling into the film program in 2014, he was hired to work in the camera equipment room (The Cage). There he helps students with film equipment rentals and technical advice. Gilbert received his associates degree in Film Production from College of the Canyons in 2017. He is continuing his educational path and plans to attend CSUN in Fall 2018 to work for a Bachelor's degree in Film.
