The department is increasing officer staffing in order to focus enforcement on collision causing factors involving motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Extra officers will be sent out to areas where bike, pedestrian and crashes occur most often in an effort to lower deaths and injuries, according to officials.

The department has created a list of all the locations where pedestrian and bike collisions have occurred along, with the violations that led to those crashes within a three-year period.

Officers will be looking for violations from motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The funding for this program comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The grant provided two days of increased officer patrolling, said Sgt Robert Hill. The first day of the increased patrol was on August 30 — where 45 citations were given. Of those citations given, 9 were for cell phone violations.

Hill said in addition to the normal daily staffing that day, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station had an additional 10 deputies on duty.

Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use non-motorized transportation, according to officials. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) website says no state has more pedestrian deaths on its roadways than California.

  1. Are they going to start ticketing bike riders who run stop signs?

They constantly do that at Sand Canyon and Lost Canyon.

  2. well there’s a financial bonanza for the city.

    such b.s.

  3. Your city fathers slowly indocurating the masses in Santa Clarita to their police state tactics. Does a police road block forcing drivers against their will to slow or stop in order to be observed or even questioned not a police state tactic? This again like all special enforcement will accomplish nothing. There isn’t a city, state, county, federal official inAmerica that drives a car, rides a bike or even walks that obeys every law. That includes officers that enforce the law. Do you really think for one moment they go home everyday thinking how safe they are making the city. Think again. Please drive, bike and walk safely.
