The Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency announced the appointment of their new officer board at their inaugural meeting on Jan. 2, as a result of Senate Bill 624, which created the new agency.

The new water agency took effect on Jan. 1 after merging the former Castaic Lake Water Agency and Newhall County Water District into one all-encompassing body for the entire valley.

The district named William Cooper, formerly of the Castaic Lake Water Agency, president of the new water board.

“The biggest issue this year is to fully integrate Valencia Water Company into the agency as we go forward,” said Cooper.

Maria Gutzeit, the former president of the Newhall County Water District, was voted vice president of the Santa Clarita Valley Agency.

The board also voted on their governing policies, as well as wages for the newly-formed water district at the meeting Tuesday, according to the agenda.

The new board president wanted to reassure customers that the transition will be “smooth” and residents will not see any change in their service.

“Customers will not see any change in the quality of their water,” said Cooper. “From their end, it will be the same product at possibly a lower price.”

  1. Well, that figures – they were the leaders of the Newhall Water District takeover. They were the ones that spent around a million dollars of public money on lobbyist and consultants and made sure no one in Newhall Water could vote on whether they wanted their water district disolved or not, even though Newhall Water customers have been voting for over sixty years.

  2. Nobody should be surprised with this breaking news.
