Temperatures began to rise to the low 80s earlier this week, and by Friday, officials expect it to be over 110 degrees in the Southern California area, according to the National Weather Service.

David Hamrick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, forecasted triple digit weather for southern California, and warned about the increase of possible wildfires.

“High temperatures are expected to reach into the 110s over the lower elevations of Southern California, southern Nevada and Arizona as the upper level ridge builds over the region,” said  Hamrick. “This will increase the potential for wildfire conditions, given the very low relative humidities.”

Excessive heat can be dangerous to residents and pets when conditions last for longer than one day, officials said.

The National Weather Service encourages the public to stay vigilant during heat waves by checking on friends and family, wearing loose-fitting clothing, avoiding unnecessary outdoor work or activities, and trying to remain in an air conditioned structure if possible.

The Occupational Safety & Health Organization warns those working during dangerously high temperatures to stay aware of their working conditions and drink plenty of water.

Those working indoors around heat-producing equipment — such as ceramic plants, glass product facilities or any factory with a boiler room — are susceptible to heat-related illnesses, according to OSHA.

The best way to combat heat-related illness is to take preemptive measures like staying hydrated, and covering exposed skin with loose, light clothing.

Another way to stay proactive against heat-related illness is knowing the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
