The charitable event is expected to take place this Friday, Sept. 7 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the SCVi Cafe on campus in Castaic.

The gathering is expected to include an authentic Puerto Rican dinner, along with a range of Puerto Rican entertainment, such as dancing, singing and games.

Proceeds will support the second “Backpack Full of Hope” service project trip that is planned for next year, officials said.

Over the past year, the first group of SCVi students participating in “Backpacks Full of Hope” made a trip to Puerto Rico to assist those on the ground still recovering from Hurricane Maria — a Category 5 hurricane that occured a year ago, which the U.S. territory is still recovering from.

A total of 16 SCVi students are scheduled to attend the next trip in April 2019 and several students are on a waitlist, according to Matt Watson, the director of maker outreach for iLEAD Schools development.

During last year’s fundraising event, students who participated were able to raise more than $20,000 for Puerto Rican aid efforts, and they hope to raise at least $30,000 at this year’s event.

“‘Backpacks Full of Hope’ exemplifies SCVi’s commitment to a student-centered approach to education that focuses on project-based and social-emotional learning principles,” Watson said in a press release. “We are so proud that this service project attracts so many student servant leaders and we look forward to welcoming members of our Santa Clarita community to this fun, family-centered event.”

Adult tickets for the “Puerto Rico Cultural Night” are being sold at $15, student tickets are $12 and any children age 6 or under are free to attend the event.
