The two-hour driving class is free and geared toward drivers who are 55 years of age and older, according to officials.

Because the elderly population is growing, the amount of elderly drivers is growing rapidly as well, according to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

“The refresher course is meant to cover the rules of the road, safety tips and street signs, including offering advice on age-related physical changes and how to adjust to those changes to remain safe,” said event organizers.

During the safety course, a classroom instruction will be held to cover topics such as basic road courtesy, information on the impact visual or hearing impairments have on driving ability, tips on avoiding or offsetting hazardous road conditions, and improving driving performance, according to officials.

Drivers will also receive an update on changes the legislature has made to rules of the road and vehicle equipment.

Some insurance companies offer discounted premiums with a certificate of course completion, which can be reviewed with insurance providers to confirm this program meets its criteria for a policy discount.

The driver safety course will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the SCV Senior Center located at 22900 Market Street in Newhall.
