A celebration of life will be held for Frank Kleeman on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Child & Family Center, located at 21545 Centre Pointe Parkway.

Kleeman died on Friday, Feb. 5 at the age of 82 after he suffered congestive heart failure, family friends told KHTS.

In 2002, he was named the Santa Clarita Valley Man of the Year and the “Philanthropist of the Year” for the Network of California Community Colleges.

Kleeman and his wife, Charlotte, were also honored by the College of the Canyons Foundation as recipients of 2005 Silver Spur Community Service Award

“Frank was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and tireless supporter of virtually every charity in the SCV,” according to a statement issued by Kleeman family. “He leaves a void, the depth of which is immeasurable and irreplaceable.”

Kleeman and his wife, Charlotte, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley in 1965 after being born and raised in Los Angeles.

Kleeman served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and also worked as a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to his biography on the Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year’s website.

“I’ve known (Frank) since I was four years old through my parents,” said Mitch Hacker, a family friend of Kleeman. “He and his wife Charlotte have been involved in various nonprofits.”

Kleeman joined the Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club in 1972, where he worked in fundraising, and in 1974, he chaired the Boys and Girls Club Auction.

He also attended law school and became an attorney, according to his biography.

In the early 1980s, he was named a Workers Compensation Judge and worked as an arbitrator and mediator in a special worker’s compensation program.

Also in the 1980s and 1990s, Kleeman was an active volunteer in many programs in the Santa Clarita Valley. He served on the board of the SCV Repertory Theatre, the College of the Canyons Foundation Board and headed various committees for the Foundation. He also served on the Newhall Redevelopment Committee.

“College of the Canyons has lost an amazing friend with Frank’s passing,” said College of the Canyons Chancellor Dianne Van Hook. “His belief in the power of education to change lives, and his integrity, characterized his more than 20 years of service on our Foundation Board of Directors.  One could tell by seeing the twinkle in his eyes that he was committed to helping others and creating opportunities for our students to realize their dreams.  He gave of himself and shared his expertise wherever it was needed.  Whether it was starting the Library Associates, chairing the Scholarly Presentation Committee, developing our scholarship program, supporting the performing arts or tutoring and mentoring students; Frank valued people and relationships. He always left what he was involved with better than he found it. He was a great man.”
