The effectiveness of Body Worn Cameras by deputies has become the center of focus as LASD looks to Civilian Oversight Commision (COC) to solicit information from the public.
Since 2013, less than 25 percent of law enforcement agencies in the U.S. used Body Worn Cameras in a survey that included 500 police departments nationwide.
After the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown and explosion of protests in Ferguson, Missouri, Body Worn Cameras were beginning to gain popularity with civilians and law enforcement agencies.
On Dec. 2 2014, President Obama proposed the federal government reimburse agencies half the cost of issuing Body Worn Cameras to personnel.
Since then, body cams have become standard issue equipment in most agencies nationwide with hopes the cameras will help protect civilians and law enforcement personnel.
The decision to gather information from the public was the result of a request from Sheriff Jim McDonnell made on September 6, 2017.
LASD is asking for the public to complete a survey by Thursday, May 17, 2018, to share opinions.
Responses by the public will be anonymous and confidential, and are needed to provide an overall understanding of the community’s input.
