“When your bite is out of balance, it causes your facial muscles to be out of balance, and facial muscles are what control our bite,” said Schweitzer, who explained that our muscles become constricted and constrained, which manifests itself in pain.

Schweitzer illustrated that an imbalance in your bite is similar to walking with a pebble in your shoe.

“If you bite down, your brain says, ‘Hey, don’t bite there’, but in a pebble in a shoe you can take the pebble out,” he said. “But what if you could never take out the pebble from your shoe? You would walk permanently in a very compromised way, and (then) all of your middle leg muscles, hip muscles and back muscles would become compromised and sore. Same thing in your bite, you bite down and your brain says, ‘Hey don’t bite there, find a better spot.’ The problem is that there isn’t a better spot, so every time you bite down, your facial muscles are straining to find a spot, and that manifests as headache pain.”

Your facial muscles are then constantly stressed because they are trying to overcompensate to try to find a balanced bite.

To fix this problem, the professionals at Valencia Headache Care use digital technology that allows them to see every distribution of pressure in your bite that they can use as a blueprint to make imperceptible adjustments.

“Over a 12-week period of time, we’re going to balance your bite and rehabilitate your muscles,” Schweitzer said.

The gradual treatment process helps ensure that the patient’s treatment is non-invasive and without discomfort, according to Schweitzer.

“This is not dental work,” he said. “We’re not trying to fix your teeth — these are very tiny and comfortable adjustments that are made over a period of time.”
